I was chosen by SheSpeaks to test out the Philips Wake-Up Light (model HF3470) and buzz about my experience. We received the box on Friday and we have used it 2 mornings now. Before I start my review of this product, here’s a little bit of background information on the product (from Amazon.com’s product page):
“The Wake-Up Light simulates the sunrise to help you greet the morning with an improved mood and energy level. Light gradually increases for 30 minutes before your alarm time to gently prepare your body to wake up and feel more energetic at the start of your day. With optional FM radio and nature sounds, the Wake-Up Light ensures waking up will be a pleasant experience.”
In simple terms, this alarm clock basically lights up slowly starting half an hour before you need to wake up. Then, at the alarm time, you’ll hear birds chirping, a soothing alarm sound or your favorite radio station. We chose the birds chirping. The idea is that you wake up more “naturally” rather than abruptly like with a normal alarm clock.
Philips Wake-Up Light Review (November 2011)
So what do I think about the product? I think it’s great! We had been using a cell phone for an alarm clock and it NEVER wakes me up. Phillip always had to wake me up. After using this product for just two days, I woke up to the alarm on my own AND I feel much less groggy. I think the light makes my body realize that it’s supposed to be getting up. My only complaint is that Phillip is too sensitive to the light and it wakes him up about 20 minutes too early. We could change the light intensity but then I don’t think it would wake me up. I think we need to do some more testing to be sure but as of right now, I love the Philips Wake-Up Light!
We have now had the Philips Wake-Up Light for over 4 years and we absolutely love it! Phillip actually really likes getting up as soon as the light comes on while I snooze away until the alarm comes on. He gets to work out or read and relax before work. I wake up when the alarm comes on and I feel refreshed, much more than I ever imagined! We are very pleased with the alarm and we actually bought one for Phillip’s dad as well. When ours dies (which will be a sad day), we will be buying another one.
My only real complaint is that it has a lot of grooves that are hard to clean. It has a grove around the buttons on the side and this gets dirty fairly fast. To really get it clean, you have to use a cotton swap dampened with alcohol or even a toothpick if you’ve let it go too long without cleaning. Not a huge issue at all but something to keep in mind if you hate cleaning as much as I do.
It has now been over 4 years since we started using the Wake-Up Light alarm clock. Recently, the button that turns the light on and off has started malfunctioning. It still works most of the time but it often makes the brightness to go up or down rather than makes the light turn off. I think it’s fairly impressive that the light took this long for anything to go wrong. The light on/off button is used at least twice a day and we’ve had it for over 4 years. 365 days x 4 years x 2 times per day is over 2,900 button presses! So it took almost 3,000 uses before it started to malfunction. I don’t think that’s bad at all! When ours finally stops working, we will be buying another one. Unfortunately, the HF3470 model of the Wake Up Light has been discontinued but Philips has released some new options such as the HF3520 that has a colored sunrise simulation. I really want to try that one!
Bottom line is that these wake-up lights are amazing and well worth the money. I don’t think I could ever go back to regular alarm clocks.
