Switching Sleep Schedules SUCKS! Try to say that 5 times fast. Yep, it’s hard and so is switching from getting up at 5am every morning to staying up until 1am. That’s what we’ve been going through for the past few days. Why? Well, Phillip was laid off from his job on the 19th. The job he had was a day shift job (7am to 3:30pm) but since it was a half hour drive, we got up at 5am to have plenty of time for all the morning routine stuff.

Fortunately we knew that the work load was dwindling and he was likely to be laid off so we had already started looking for jobs. We obsessively filled out job applications and Phillip went to a career fair for a local factory. On Monday the 23rd, we got desperate (we’re on a VERY tight budget so being without work is a HUGE issue) so we called every temp agency in town until he finally got a new job. It was a plastics manufacturing factory about 25 miles away. It paid the same as his last job, had almost the same hours, and was about the same driving time. So he accepted and went to work.

On his third day, Phillip found out that he was supposed to have fork truck experience in order to work there (oops!). They were going to allow him to keep working but they weren’t happy. We also weren’t so happy with the job. They kept asking him to violate safety regulations and go without breaks.

That is totally me right now.

Fortunately, another temp agency in town called to offer a different job. It was also at a plastics manufacturer but it was better in 3 ways. 1-it was in town (about a 10 minute drive), 2-it was 2nd shift (we’re night owls) and 3-the factory has an EXCELLENT reputation. The only downside was a $1 per hour pay cut. Even with the pay cut, we opted for the local job. With the amount of gas we’ll save, it’s worth it.

So now we’re switching from getting up at 5am every morning to going to sleep at 1am and waking up around 9am. It doesn’t sound like a huge shift but it’s been tough on us. As it stands, it’s 1am right now and we’re getting ready for bed. I feel exhausted, even though we haven’t done anything strenuous today. I’ve also been ridiculously irritable. So please don’t get in my way – I just might punch you in the face.

  1. Been there with my hubby too. Went from 7am-? (contractor) to working 7pm- 5am! We stayed with it for almost 3 months then went back to contracting…. lol. Congratulations on the new job! Hope you guys can both adjust to the new schedule without punching anyone in the face… 😛

  2. Yuck, I feel ya on this one! Back when I was working, I was hired by a factory, and in the first 3 months of starting that job I had worked all 3 shifts. Sucked. My hubby used to work swing shift, so glad he was able to get a day shift position!

  3. I know what you mean I have worked at AT&T 4years on day shift. The closest I ever got to night was 11pm that was in my 2nd year. As of jan 1st I switched from 9am-8pm to 1am-12pm and then April 1st I switched to 12am -9am which totally killed me! I spent lots of days trying to make the switch staying up 24hrs straight. I took a week off work so I could adjust without going to work and dealing with people.
