Do It Works Wraps Really Work?

Do "It Works" Wraps work or are they a scam?

If you follow very many blogs, you’ve likely seen people selling It Works Wraps that claim to help you “lose 1-3 inches with each wrap”. I have seen more bloggers than I can count who have cashed in on this fad and sell them to their readers. I was extremely skeptical of these wraps but wanted to try one just so I could see whether any of their claims were correct. The claims include “lose 1-3 inches with your first wrap” and “improves the look of stretch marks.” So I started entering giveaways to see if I could win one. A few weeks later, I won a set of 4 wraps and some samples of “Greens.” I figured that worst case scenario was that I would try it and nothing would happen. But I couldn’t have been more wrong!

When I got the wraps, I read all of the included instructions as well as the Frequently Asked Questions on the It Works website. I didn’t take before or after pictures because I wasn’t actually planning to write about or share my experience but I did take measurements. I measured at my belly button, 3 inches above and 3 inches below (48″, 47″ and 48.5″ respectively, for the record). I put the wrap on and then put 2 tight but comfy tank tops on top to hold the wrap in place. I then sat at my computer, going about my day as usual and drinking plenty of water. The FAQs suggest up to half your body weight for the whole day but since I weigh 290 pounds, I couldn’t drink 145 ounces without risking water poisoning so I drank 10 glasses of water (80 ounces) over the course of the day, 20 ounces while the wrap was on. I felt fine while the wrap was on (maybe a little cold but not bad) but once I took it off, I realized something was very wrong.

I was extremely bloated. I measured around my belly button and the measurement was 50.5 inches. That is 2.5 inches UP from my original measurement. I had read on various blogs and forums that bloating is “normal” as your body is getting rid of toxins and if you bloat you will almost definitely have great inch loss as the days go on. I thought, “okay, I can deal with some bloating for a few days” but then the headaches, extreme hunger and nausea showed up. No, I am not joking. I felt horrible that first day. I was extremely bloated, I had a terrible headache, I was very hungry but also nauseous. I asked several It Works wraps reps if that was normal and one said yes, a few said no, and another one asked if I was pregnant or taking prescription medication (no to both). I dealt with the symptoms the best that I could and went to sleep hoping that I would feel better the next day.

Unfortunately, that didn’t work. I felt almost as bad the 2nd day as the first day but the headache was present from the time I woke up until I went to sleep. The bloating went down a bit but I was still an inch up from my original measurement and I felt very full. I was still very hungry but felt nauseous. I drank another 80 ounces of water to help “flush out toxins” as directed. On day 3, I felt considerably better than days 1 and 2 but still felt a little off.

On Thursday (72 hours later), I did my official after measurement and my belly button measurement was 48.5 inches, half an inch bigger than the original measurement. I finally felt “back to normal” but my measurements did not go down, my skin felt the same and my stretch marks looked the same. I feel that the It Works wraps are absolutely NOT worth it and in fact can do more harm than good. Oh, and if you’re wondering about the “Greens” samples, let me just say that they are absolutely, positively disgusting. Imagine mixing orange flavoring, alka seltzer and seaweed in a blender and adding water. That’s about what it tasted like to me. I gagged, almost threw up and washed my mouth out with lots and lots of water.

If my review isn’t enough to sway you away from throwing your money away, I’d like to share some scientific proof that body wraps can’t really help you lose weight or inches.

Can a Body Wrap Detox?
The claim sounds good, but lacks scientific evidence, doctors say. “There’s never been any real scientific evidence that body wraps pull out toxins or purify your body in any way,” says Elizabeth Tanzi, MD, a Washington, D.C. dermatologist (who does not offer body wraps in her practice) and clinical instructor at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

Can a Body Wrap Slim You?
As for the slimming wraps, “any loss of inches is going to be temporary,” Fryhofer says. ”Wraps cannot take the place of a healthy diet and exercise.” Susie Ellis agrees. “After you take the [slimming] wrap off, there will be an appearance of tightness,” she says. “It is definitely temporary.” It may last, she says, for a day or two.

“They won’t give you long-term weight loss,” Tanzi says. “They can temporarily make you feel a little thinner and when you look at the scale the pounds can go down a pound or two. But that’s water weight loss. It’s a temporary phenomenon.”

Can a Body Wrap Banish Cellulite?
Likewise, the cellulite body wraps won’t take away the dimpled skin, Ellis says. “The appearance can be better,” she says. But even the best cellulite wrap ”does not take away cellulite, it does not suck out fat.”

Tanzi agrees. “It may make cellulite look better for a day or two,” by plumping up the skin, she says.

  1. NO they do NOT work! I hate how many people think it does! I did not lose any when I tried the wrap for $25. I wish I could get my money back! I was trying to help a friend and see if it would work. The rep told me well you didn’t drink enough….yea, 3 bottles of water in an hour is enough I think! Well you didn’t put it on right, yes I did they measured and everything. Wait 3 days and you will see a difference, sometimes that’s what it takes. Nope, same measurements that’s why I’m complaining! Her last comment was well, it doesn’t always work for everyone. Yea, fall back answer! Was NOT happy and I would be fine with it being a temporary thing. An inch or two down would have helped motivate me to lose more and eat right, etc. Instead, I now HATE this company and how they steal so much money from people for something that does NOT work!
